National E-Health Strategy

In early 2008, Australian Health Ministers, through the Australian Health Ministers' Advisory Council, commissioned Deloitte to develop a strategic framework and plan to guide national coordination and collaboration in E-Health. As part of this process, Deloitte conducted a series of national consultations which included Commonwealth, State and Territory Governments, general practitioners, medical specialists, nursing and allied health, pathology, radiology and pharmacy sectors, health information specialists, health service managers, researchers, academics and consumers. eHealthNT implementation is a joint initiative of the
Australian Government's Department of Health and Ageing and the
Northern Territory Government's Department of Health and Community Services

eHealthNT Services

In July 2005, eHealthNT commenced implementation of a number of e-Health initiatives. Major progress was made in the 2006/07 financial year and eHealthNT, in partnership with key stakeholders and the Australian Government, is building on these achievements by implementing the following projects in 2007/08.

Progressive Implementation of the eHealthNT Shared Electronic Record targeting rural and remote communities and Indigenous urban populations:

  • participating providers to create and view shared electronic health records including current health profiles for consumers in participating remote, rural and urban communities.
  • expand Shared Electronic Health Record coverage to include Nganampa Aboriginal Medical Service and remote Indigenous communities in the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Homelands of Northern SA.
  • undertake a feasibility study of including the Aboriginal Medical Services in the East Kimberley region of WA.

Progressive Implementation of the eHealthNT Shared Electronic Health Record Service into major Urban Private GP Practices:

  • implement the eHealthNT Shared Electronic Record into 3 major urban GP practices in Darwin and provide evidence of benefits realisation to inform SEHR implementation in other urban environments, from a consumer and a provider perspective.

Progressive Implementation of e-Health NT Health Provider e-Xchange Program Secure Electronic Messaging Service:

  • continue the progressive implementation of the Secure Electronic Messaging Service (including referral management services and diagnostic results reporting), targeting participation of 95% of provider sites in the Top End and Central Australia.
  • expand the Secure Electronic Messaging Service coverage to include Aboriginal Medical Service providers around the remote Indigenous communities in the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Homelands of Northern SA and Ngaanyatjarra Homelands in WA.
  • undertake a feasibility study to extend the Secure Electronic Messaging Service to the East Kimberley region in WA.

Further Development and Implementation of eHealthNT Health Provider
e-Xchange Program Electronic Transfer of Prescriptions:

  • continued development of electronic transmission of prescriptions, decision support and advanced medication management for major aged care service provider.
  • continued development of community provider prescribing.

Integration of the Shared Electronic Health Record and Secure Electronic Messaging Service:

  • continue integration of the Shared Electronic Health Record and Secure Electronic Messaging Service in conjunction with the progressive roll out of the Primary Care Information System Patient Recall and Chronic Disease Management System to all Territory operated remote community health centres in the NT.

Progressive Implementation of Medchart Advanced Medication Management (National Input Medication Chart compliant) into Northern Territory Public Hospitals:

  • includes capture of Medications on Admission, Electronic Prescribing, Pharmacy Review, Nurse Drug Administration, Advanced Decision Support and automatic inclusion of Discharge Medications into Inpatient Discharge Summaries and ED Event Summaries and integration with the SEHR and P2P Services.
