SEHR Timelines and Achievements
Background
- Aboriginal Territorians comprise about one third of the Territory's population and make up a considerable proportion of people who use health and community services. They also have the greatest health and welfare needs of any group of Territorians.
- It is widely recognized that the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people is generally much poorer than that of other Australians. In the Territory, Aboriginal people comprise over:
- 40% of all hospital separations
- 50% of all hospital separations outside Darwin
- 40% of all Aged high level care places
- 50% of disabilities services clients
- Most Aboriginal Territorians live in very remote communities, many in small communities of 50 people or less.
- Studies have identified that poor communication between sectors delivering health care to Indigenous Territorians have resulted in frequent re-admissions, duplication of interventions, people 'walking out' and potential risk to the individual's health and well being.
